Stand for the 2nd!

A very popular topic in politics right now is gun control and gun rights. With all the recent attacks on innocent people, why would anyone be opposed to more gun control? While I am not completely against gun control, there are many things with which I don't agree. As a girl coming from a redneck family, I am very familiar with guns. I have been handling and shooting guns since I was eight, and I have always enjoyed it. Guns are an important part of American’s rights. The second amendment gives us the rights to “keep and bear arms” meaning we are allowed to possess firearms for our own protection. Self protection is a right given to us by God. The founders of our country believed it was necessary for our citizens to own guns for the protection of our liberties. President Barack Obama is pushing gun control in the United States. He says to purchase a gun you must pass a background check. While I believe that would be beneficial, I don’t think it would help much. The biggest threat is not the guns but the people who hold the guns. People kill people. We have seen proven facts that strict gun control results in higher, violent crime acts. The UK has one of the highest rate of violent crime acts, more so than the United States. Britain has the second highest overall crime rate in Europe. Even France’s gun control laws did not stop the horrendous attack that killed at least 130 innocent people. If anything, they limited the citizens in their own protection. If we have the ability to defend ourselves, maybe we can stop tragedies from occurring. By creating more strict laws, you are damaging the safety of the country. I think we need to focus on enforcing the laws that are already set in place instead of creating more that will just go unfollowed. Even if you ban them all together, guns are still going to get in the hands of the wrong people. Criminals are obtaining guns in spite of the fact that we have laws set up to prevent that from happening. Why don't we stop trying to push more laws, punishing honest people? We as citizens have a responsibility. That responsibility is to simply, be responsible. - Les Anya
